Truck Driver Accused Of Transporting Drugs

For the second time in a week, Weirton police searched a semitrailer they said was transporting numerous types of illegal drugs.

The driver, 44-year-old David Stanak, of New Cumberland, was arrested last Thursday on Cove Road after police said they received tips that he transported crystal methamphetamine, Percocet, Vicodin and marijuana in his truck.

Police said they have reason to believe Stanak, who works for Cross Transportation, had been transporting drugs across state lines.

"That day he had been in Pennsylvania and Ohio and just returned to West Virginia," said Weirton Detective Girard Spencer.

They said they found drugs hidden in the cab of the truck last Thursday and said that a second search might yield more drugs hidden in the trailer.

Spencer said when he approached Stanak, he noticed a strong smell of marijuana then called for the drug dog.

"He was kind of cocky and said, 'If you have the dogs here, you can find what you want to find and we did find it,'" Spencer said.

Police also said they found a type of catheter in the cab with two vials of urine inside. Officers said they believe the device is used to pass drug tests.

Stanak faces four counts of possessing a controlled substance, but police said more charges may be pending depending on what Wednesday's search yields.
