Target 9 Uncovers Suspicious Substitute's Criminal History

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 – updated: 10:14 pm EDT October 10, 2007

NEWS9 uncovered that the man accused of sneaking into the Harrison Hills School District without being certified with Huffmaster to teach as a substitute, has a lengthy criminal history.

NEWS9 caught up with Frederick Saunders Wednesday afternoon and he wouldn’t talk about how he was able to slip through security and teach at the district, but Huffmaster did talk to NEWS9 -- saying Saunders lied about his employment with them.

"Mr. Saunders did not clear the credential process, so we did not scan his fingerprints or otherwise run a background on him because he did not have the appropriate credentials to continue the process," said Huffmaster Vice President Peter Johnson.

NEWS9 uncovered Saunders has a lengthy criminal history spanning from 1994 to 2004 when he was arrested on drug charges that were later reduced to disorderly conduct, several driving suspended charges, and criminal trespassing.

Superintendent Jim Drexler said he's still in shock over the whole incident, but noted that they beefed up security since -- making subs go through two checks everyday and they now wear photo identification badges.

NEWS9 asked Drexler to let our cameras inside the schools. He refused, but assured us that if any parents were concerned, they could be escorted around the building.

NEWS9 also learned that one substitute was pulled off the job last week after making an unprofessional comment, and we got word that another substitute was removed by security Wednesday afternoon.

Drexler assured NEWS9 he would explain the details surrounding that, but has yet to get back to us.
