Harrison Hills Teachers Head Back To Classrooms

After more than eight hours at the bargaining table, Harrison Hills teachers put down the picket signs and headed back to the classroom on Friday.

The move came after the teachers' union and school district reached a tentative agreement late Thursday.

Teachers are expected to vote on the deal next Thursday. If teachers accept the offer, the board is also expected to sign off on it and the bitter two-week strike will officially end.

Superintendent Jim Drexler said he doesn't want to comment until the teachers vote on the contract, but said he's glad teachers are back on the job and hopes things return to normal soon.

Specific details about the tentative agreement were not released on Friday, but the teachers' union said there were some sticking points that took time to work through.

Harrison Hills Teachers Association spokeswoman Linda Rusen said negotiations included the length of the contract, insurance and salary.

Though teachers were back on the job, students were not in school Friday. Instead, teachers used that time to prepare for class on Monday.

"It seems strange without the kids, but we have a lot of work to do in our classrooms. We are going to start where we left off and hopefully get caught up," Rusen said.
