Police: Fast Thinking Drive-Through Workers Snare Drunk Driver

Monday, October 15, 2007 – updated: 6:44 pm EDT October 15, 2007

Tera McClung's first mistake was getting behind the wheel with a blood alcohol content nearly four times the legal limit with her toddler in tow.

Her second mistake was pulling up to the Taco Bell drive-through window.

When McClung placed her order Sunday night, employees could tell something was wrong and took quick action to get the toddler out of what they perceived to be a very dangerous situation.

"They could obviously tell she was intoxicated. They did the right thing and called police," said Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty.

Taco Bell employees stalled McClung at the drive-through window until police arrived. McClung failed sobriety tests and blew a .334 on a breathalyzer test, which is nearly four times the legal limit.

"The amount she would have consumed to put her at that. It's amazing she could even drive," McCafferty said.

Police said McClung's 2-year-old daughter was in the back seat for the entire ride. The child and McClung's three other children are now in their grandmother's care. Officials said she was sent to a 10-hour detox to sober up.

A judge entered a not-guilty plea on McClung's behalf at an arraignment on Monday because McClung could not decide how to plea.

McClung remains in the Jefferson County Justice Center on $10,000 bond on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, child endangerment, driving suspended and expired plates. Her trial is set for Nov. 7.
