Table Gaming Brings Hopes Of Bigger County Budgets

Posted: 12:01 pm EDT October 17, 2007Updated: 2:33 pm EDT October 17, 2007

As racetracks prepare for table gaming as early as this Friday, some local county officials said they're hoping for bigger budgets.

At Wheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center, officials said they are planning for the poker room to open in just two days. County officials said they are being "very cautious" about anticipating any money from table gaming.

Once table games are up and running, however, county officials said they do expect some revenue from table games, but said they aren't sure how much.

They said they didn't budget money from table games for the fiscal year for two reasons: they had to prepare their budget in March, before the table gaming election; and they weren't sure when table games would be up and running.

Greg Stewart, Ohio County administrator, said any money that does come in this year would be carried over to next year's budget.

"There would be some additional projects out there that we may take a look at. There may be some debt reduction we may want to take off the county books, or there's a possibility of setting some of that aside for a rainy day fund," Stewart said.

He said the commission is confident that money from table gaming will definitely be a boost to the area. Over the next three to six months, he said officials will have a better idea about budgeting decisions for the upcoming year.
