Police Find 100 Marijuana Plants Growing In Secret Camp

Saturday, October 20, 2007 – updated: 1:09 am EDT October 21, 2007

Police took nearly 100 marijuana plants off the streets in Ohio county Saturday. Investigators said some of the plants were 17 ft. tall and were hidden away in a secret camp.

Members of the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police, Wheeling Police and Ohio Valley Drug Task Force shut down what they called a “sophisticated camp” in a secluded area with rough terrain in the Edgewood section of Wheeling.

Nearly 100 marijuana plants were logged into evidence Saturday night all because of an anonymous tip.

"I received a tip from a concerned Ohio County resident who spotted this," said Deputy K.J. Lewis of the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators said all the plants were growing deep into the woods near a residential section of Wheeling.

"In fact, it's accessible only by foot. We climbed the side of a mountain to get to this growing operation, and that’s what helped hide it from the public’s view," said Sgt. J.A. Laing of the West Virginia State Police.

Police said they found a large, sophisticated camp -- complete with tents, food and clothes. They said they even found tools like hatchets and chainsaws, bedding, and supplies.

"To sustain several people for probably many days or even weeks," said Laing.

Police said the camp was housing nearly $100,000 worth of marijuana. The plants ranged from four to 17 ft. tall.

Investigators said they believe it started indoors -- then several people spent lots of time hauling equipment to the camp, then turned it into a sophisticated grow.

"They used a natural spring and diverted it as an irrigation system into these plants," said Laing.

Investigators from several agencies said this find was a rewarding one.

"It’s always a good feeling for all of us to know that we got it away from the people who are trying to put it on the streets," said Lewis.

No arrests have been made, but investigators said they have several strong suspects in mind.
