Identity Theft Hits Ohio Valley

Posted: 6:25 pm EDT October 25, 2007Updated: 9:37 pm EDT October 25, 2007

Two possible cases of identity theft were reported in Belmont County in just two days, with one potential case in Bellaire and the other in St. Clairsville.

Sheriff Fred Thompson said identity theft, and credit card theft alike, are a major problem in the county-- and he said often, one leads to the other.

Recently in Bellaire, a man said someone stole one of his credit cards and spent roughly $1,000 in his name. He said whoever stole his card also changed the address listed on the credit card account.

In St. Clairsville a woman reportedly had one of her credit cards stolen as well, and said whoever stole it spent nearly $4,000 in her name.

Sheriff Thompson said a lot of times it's almost impossible to track down those responsible for both identity theft and credit card theft, and no arrests have been made in either case.
