BYESVILLE, Ohio -- A Wintersville man is behind bars in Guernsey County after police said he kidnapped a woman, robbed a pharmacy and held a hostage at gunpoint.Police aren’t releasing the suspect’s identity other than to say that he’s a white male in his late 20’s.The Byesville Pharmacy sits closed for the night, but earlier Friday it was a much different scene.Police said a man stormed the store with a gun in his hand and demanded cash and high-strength pain killers.Ashley Hill said she saw the whole thing."He had a hat on pulled over his face. He was bigger with kind of shaggy hair. You could see the hair sticking out of the hat," said Hill.Police said the man kidnapped a woman earlier in the Cleveland area, then drove straight to the pharmacy."He just came from the pharmacy but he walked around the side holding the gun, pointed it at the van, then pointed it toward the cops," said Hill. Then, police said he held the gun to his hostage's head, forced her to drive, and started an erratic, high-speed chase. The chase went from Byesville and out onto the interstate -- reaching up to 95 mph. Police said all the while, he held a gun to the hostage’s head."Several times he did swerve and cut off other vehicles. He came extremely close to commercial vehicles," said Byesville Police Chief John Hornak.Spike strips eventually got the car stopped in Winterset."We negotiated with him and eventually got the victim released from the vehicle," said Hornak. After turning the gun on himself, police said they negotiated with him again and eventually he gave himself up."Everybody gets to go home tonight except the perpetrator. And he gets to stay safely locked up," said Hornak. The victim is safe and was released to her family. Everything the suspect got away with from the pharmacy has been recovered. The suspect is in lock-up at the Guernsey County Jail charged with armed robbery, but more charges are pending.
