Edison Local Voting Under Way As Teachers' Strike Looms

Posted: 11:19 pm EST November 6, 2007Updated: 11:22 pm EST November 6, 2007

With a teachers' strike set to begin in hours, two big races Tuesday were in the Edison Local School District.

With 25 percent of precincts reporting, it appeared the Edison school income tax would fail by a large margin.

There were also two school board seats up for grabs, and as of 11 p.m., the two frontrunners were Larry Crow and Tracey Wright.

In the meantime, parking lots were being sealed off in preparation for the strike.

"I would like to recommend and have already that they get back and negotiate, be positive, try to work this out so the kids don't suffer," Crow said.

If he wins the election, Crow won't start until January so he probably won't have to deal with the strike directly.

Union representatives said they will stay on the picket line as long as it takes.

Jamie Evans, union spokesperson, said, "The board has turned their backs on us and we're willing to stand as long as we need to in order to get a fair contract."

Teachers will head to the picket lines at 5 a.m. Wednesday. Substitute teachers will be coming in and buses will be running, but many parents said they won't be sending their kids to school.
