Teacher Struck Twice; Sheriff Tosses Out Security On Edison Picket Lines

Posted: 10:17 am EST November 7, 2007Updated: 2:42 pm EST November 7, 2007

Edison Local School District teachers started picketing at 5 a.m. Wednesday and within minutes chaos erupted. A teacher claimed he was run over twice, and the sheriff had to threatened to make arrests.

Teachers went running after a man claimed he was hit by a school employee who drove right through their picket at Edison Local High School.

"[He] ran over my left foot and knocked me to the ground, also injured my wrist. I'm terribly disappointed in their behavior," said Larry Neptune.

Just minutes later, Neptune said he was hit again by another driver -- knocked to the ground a second time.

He didn't have to be transported and said he would be OK.

Neptune said the people who crossed the picket lines were their neighbors, co-workers, and friends.

"We would just like to get this settled so we can get back in the classroom and teach our kids," said Neptune.

More tense moments followed. Sheriff Fred Abdalla threatened to arrest members of the IMAC security team hired by the school. Abdalla said they didn't have the proper paperwork and never notified him they'd be coming into the county.

The sheriff said the IMAC employees didn’t comply at first when he asked them to leave, but when he threatened to take them out in cuffs, they drove away.

Deputies at the scene continued taking statements from witnesses about the morning chaos, and made sure the school buses and other drivers were able to come and go safely -- especially when students arrived.

There's no word yet whether charges will be filed against any of the drivers who allegedly hit Neptune.
