Edison Local's Superintendent Lisa Carmichael told NEWS9 Wednesday the board offered the teachers as much as the district could due to tough financial times, and they didn't want to give up management rights to transfer teachers when they wanted. In addition, the defeat of a school levy in Tuesday's election is only making the situation worse, she said."Our board ratified and implemented a contract they thought was fair and from the teachers standpoint they are asking to relinquish management rights that we are not willing to do," Carmichael said."We are quickly facing fiscal emergency...we were counting on money that would generate from that levy. It's going to be back to the bargaining table and possibly more cuts," she explained.Carmichael said she has notified the parents that as long as parents notify the school board and ask permission to excuse their kids from school, they will be given an opportunity to make up that work.As far as any contract talks, Carmichael said the board is actively engaging in the process, but there are no dates or times currently scheduled.
