Board Member-Elect Reacts To Picket Line Incidents

A board member-elect is speaking out about recent incidents on the picket line in the Edison Local School District.

Larry Crowe, who was recently elected to the Edison Local School Board, told NEWS9 he is upset about what is happening on the picket line.

On day one of the teacher strike, a teacher claimed he was hit by a car two times.

Then the Jefferson County sheriff told NEWS9 he found that 10 security guards, who were hired by the school board to work during the strike, have criminal backgrounds.

Sheriff Fred Abdalla immediately notified the school, and he said school officials fired the guards.

NEWS9 tried to contact officials from the school district to comment on the alleged accident at the picket line and the guards’ histories, but no one has returned our calls.

Newly-elected board member Crowe told NEWS9 it hurts to see that these picket line incidents are happening.

"To me we're not doing the right thing for the kids," said Crowe.

Crowe said he wants to see positive changes made in the school district.

As for why the district hasn't commented to the public about the recent incidents during the strike, Crowe said:

"I think that this past year, being in fiscal watch, they've gone through so many things and they've had to deal with so much negativity in our school district, probably at this point they're probably a little bit tired of taking anymore calls,” said Crowe.

Teachers told NEWS9 they plan to head back to the picket line on Thursday, but Crowe said he is hoping there is a different plan in the works.

"They need to both come back to the table,” said Crowe. “They need to be flexible, and we need to get past this."
