Edison Financial State 'Bleak,' Superintendent Says

Thursday, November 8, 2007 – updated: 5:23 pm EST November 8, 2007

As teachers in the Edison Local School District picketed for a second day, the school board requested an injunction hearing in Jefferson County Common Pleas Court.

Superintendent Lisa Carmichael said, no matter what happens with the teachers' strike, the district is in a bleak financial state. She said the levy that failed Tuesday night speaks volumes, but it could lead to more cuts in the district.

Carmichael said the board offered as much as the district could to the teachers in what it is calling a "last and final offer" due to tough financial times.

"We were placed on fiscal watch a few months ago, and we're quickly approaching fiscal emergency. This is a very difficult time," she said.

A union representative said the board's offer includes a 6 percent pay raise over three years but said there are too many concessions on health care.

The injunction hearing requested by the board is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Stay with NEWS9 and WTOV9.com for continuing coverage as details become available.
