Edison Local Union, School Board Prepare To Negotiate

Posted: 3:59 pm EST November 13, 2007Updated: 4:43 pm EST November 13, 2007

More than a week after teachers hit the picket lines, the Edison Local union and school board are scheduled to negotiate on Friday, according to union spokesman Jamie Evans.

In the meantime, the union released details on how much the school district is paying to keep the schools up and running during the strike.

The district is paying security guard commanders $40 per hour; supervisors are paid $28 an hour; and officers are paid $20 an hour.

Superintendent Lisa Carmichael said the number of guards fluctuates from day-to-day, so there is no exact total on what's being spent on security.

With regard to teachers, local substitutes earn up to $200 per day, and out-of-town subs get $280 a day. The extra $80 is to cover hotel expenses.

Union officials said, based on their estimates, the district is spending $100,000 a week to keep the schools open.

Carmichael said she doesn't have the numbers yet because she hasn't received an invoice from the security group IMAC yet, but she said they are saving $32,000 a day on teachers' salaries.

The negotiations are set to begin at 4 p.m. Friday. Stay with NEWS9 and WTOV9.com for continuing coverage.
