Emergency Sirens Sound Off In McMechen

Posted: 11:31 am EST January 25, 2008Updated: 2:12 pm EST January 25, 2008

The sounds of sirens kept ringing in McMechen Friday morning but not because of any emergency, the mayor said.

The village was having some issues with the new 911 computer system, according to the mayor.

Residents have been hearing the fire department's warning siren, and NEWS9's been receiving emails from people there asking for information and how long the alarm will continue.

The volunteer fire department's siren is not compatible with the 911 system's computers, said the mayor, so when a dispatcher wants to sound that siren, they are having to do it manually instead of it sounding automatically.

Most of the firefighters are notified of calls by radio before the siren goes off, the mayor said. However, without that siren some firefighters who live in the area may not hear about the call right away.
