Convicted Felon Seeks Presidential Pardon To Hold Office

Candidate Could Win, But Not Serve Unless President Or Judge Takes Action

Robert Steve Vukelic is running for one of two open spots on the Jefferson County Commission. But, in order to hold office, he is seeking a pardon from President Bush. That’s because Vukelic was convicted of a felony in 2001.

"That's something in the past. It's taken a long time to get rid of. It will never go away. Basically I failed to report a crime committed against me," said Vukelic.

He spent six months behind bars for a misprision felony. Vukelic would not go into detail about the conviction, but said he will be able to hold office if he gets a pardon from the president, or a judge seals his record.

He said he hopes voters look past his record, and vote him into office.

“I think people are going to look through that. I think they know what I’ve done for this community," said Vukelic.

The primary election is March 4.
