A contestant on Fox Television's "Moment of Truth" revealed to a national audience Feb. 7 that he added a tip on a customer's bill for his own benefit.Richmond-area resident John Recznik said he could relate to that situation. He said he went to a local restaurant and used his credit card to pay his bill and somehow $2 was added to the transaction between the time he signed the receipt and when it was run through the register. He said when he went back to the restaurant three weeks later, he tipped with cash. His bill that night was $31.21, but when he received his credit card statement, he was charged $38.21. This time he called the restaurant and spoke with an assistant manager. According to the receipts, the same waitress waited on him. When NEWS9 showed the receipts to the manager of the restaurant, the restaurant conducted an investigation . The manager said they had evidence the waitress had padded bills fifteen times during that month alone.Since NEWS9's investigation began, the restaurant has fired the waitress, something the manager said he has done in the past and will keep on doing.NEWS9 spoke with a former waitress who said she witnessed co-workers overcharging customers for their own benefit and they got fired because of it.If you want to be able to correct a similar problem if it happens to you, NEWS9 suggests keeping your credit card receipt after using it at a restaurant and matching that total with your credit card bill.-Dino Orsatti NEWS9
