Steubenville To Close Connectors If Salt Shipment Isn't Received

Steubenville officials said if the city doesn't receive a shipment of salt Thursday, and if the weather is inclement overnight, they will close two connectors.

Officials said they will close the John Scott Highway connector and the Lovers Lane Connector, if the salt doesn't come in Thursday, until such time as it is deemed safe to travel.

If the connectors are closed, motorists will be required to use Sunset Boulevard to access state Route 7 and U.S. Route 22.

Street Superintendent Joe DeSantis estimated crews have about 300 to 400 tons of salt on hand. They are awaiting a shipment of 1,200 tons which is expected to arrive Friday morning at the earliest.

"If we get the snow, then the ice, then back to snow again, we'll be in trouble," DeSantis said.

He did not say when the connectors would close and said that would depend on the severity of the storm.

"There have been some wrecks on those two connectors and we're trying to avoid that," he said.

DeSantis said he's been talking to the supplier, Morton Salt in Cleveland, for days, who said severe weather in states like Wisconsin and Indiana are using up supplies.

"The bulk of the salt is being shipped out to that area and, consequently, smaller communities around here are running short and deliveries are hard to come by," he said.

If road crews can keep up with the connectors by plowing and by using the amount of salt on hand, he said then the connectors will remain open.
