A major water line break in Steubenville forced several Jefferson County offices to close down Thursday.

Officials said the break affected all of downtown Steubenville. Water was not restored as of 5:20 p.m.

A water boil order will be in effect for those affected by the water line break, which is generally those living in the downtown area.

The water department said a contractor doing work for Franciscan University accidentally ruptured a 20-inch water line on University Boulevard by the Holiday Inn.

Jefferson County commissioners closed the courthouse, the annex building, the War Memorial building and Job and Family Services as a result of the break.
