A local man is dead after a one-vehicle crash outside of Wellsville Thursday morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said they got the call about the accident on Old Irondale Road around 3 a.m. Thursday.

Sgt. Jeff Smith said he believed 47-year-old Irondale man George McDowell was going home when his car hit a tree.

Smith said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith said McDowell was not wearing a seat belt and that it played a contributing role in McDowell's death.

However, Smith added that the accident is still under investigation.

Troopers told NEWS9 they are still working to determine exactly why McDowell went off the roadway.
