St. Clairsville police are investigating to determine whether charges will be filed after a woman was killed by a car early Thursday.

Mary Carroll, 23, was killed when a car hit her on Newell Avenue near Route 9 around 2 a.m. Thursday.

Police said the driver just kept going but they were able to identify the woman behind the wheel.

Police said that when they arrived on the scene, they found Carroll lying in the street.

She was rushed to the hospital but later died.

A close friend of Carroll’s said he witnessed the accident and was by her side, holding her hand, after it happened.

Police at this time have not arrested and are not releasing the name of the woman they said hit Carroll.

Police said they know who she is and later found her outside of St. Clairsville.

People who live near the accident scene said there are crashes on Newell Avenue frequently.

It’s a busy St. Clairsville road that people said has had its share of crashes.

“It’s a high traffic area. It’s kind of dangerous. Cars fly up and down,” said Dale Folmar, a local business owner.

“Pulling out of here sometimes you take your life in your hands,” Folmar said.
