Prosecutor Objects To Candidate's Bid To Have Felony Record Sealed

Straus Files Objection To Motion That Would Allow Vukelic To Serve As County Commissioner

The Jefferson County prosecutor has a filed an objection to a motion that would’ve sealed the record of a candidate running for county commissioner.

Prosecutor Tom Straus has filed the objection in regards to sealing the record of Steve Vukelic, who's a Democratic candidate running for Jefferson County commissioner.

Because Vukelic has a felony conviction in his past, he can't hold office unless that record is sealed.

Vukelic told NEWS9 that the objection from the prosecutor is not going to stop him from moving forward with the commissioner race.

"This is just the beginning,” said Vukelic. “I guess the gloves have to come off now."

"He put up the roadblock, the first roadblock,” said Vukelic.

In the objection filed on Friday, May 2, Straus stated that the court does not have jurisdiction to seal Vukelic's records since he's a twice-convicted DUI offender.

Straus said that's against Ohio’s revised code.

Vukelic acknowledges the DUI incidents, but he said that one of the cases was expunged.

"Those are all over with,” said Vukelic. “People get DWIs every day. They drive back and forth. It's not right to drive and drink."

The petition also stated that Vukelic's felony conviction involved payment to a number of public officials to influence them.

Vukelic denied this point.

"Some of things they're saying are one, old news, and two, are not so true," said Vukelic.

Vukelic said he will get the record sealed and move forward with the race.

"I don't think the people want me to back out of this thing so easy, if they do, then I guess I will," said Vukelic.

Vukelic said he plans on reacting to points made in this objection on Thursday at the county commissioner's meeting.
