Police Searching For Hit-And-Run Drivers

UPDATED: 1:47 pm EDT May 12, 2008

City Police are investigating a series of hit-and-run crashes in the city of Steubenville Sunday evening after three cars on the same street were struck and the driver of one car actually chased the fleeing driver.

Neighbors on Opal Boulevard said cars speed up and down the street all the time but they have never seen so many crashes in such a short amount of time.

Dozens of people came rushing out of their homes to find out what had turned their quiet neighborhood upside down.

Hit-and-run victim Dave Chodorowski said he heard a crash and came running up the street.

“I saw my car got smooshed and you see this little Mercury tailing away,” he said.

Police said it started when three men inside a Mercury Sable ran into the back of a vehicle on Sunset Boulevard and then tried to leave the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was not going to let them get away and police said he followed the car to Opal, where it hit a Camry and a yellow Neon, causing a chain reaction.

“It was crazy,” said Rachel Schrader, another victim.

“He said 'your car is hit.' I said ‘Oh my God’ and we realized my car was hit into his car. Those are our cars. What are we supposed to do?” Schrader said.

Police said the car then crashed into a yard and the men inside took off with the engine still running and the car still in gear.

Schrader said her husband and a neighbor chased the men but they got away.

“They went running after them. The car was right up there and nobody was in it. It was still moving whenever they got out,” she said.

The victim’s want police to find the men soon so that they can be punished.

“You shouldn’t be able to hit a car and run off. What if someone was in one of those cars? Somebody could have gotten hurt, so I just want justice,” Chodorowski said.

Police said three young men are responsible for the hit-and-run crashes and police are still looking for them.
