Are New Jobs, Health Care Coming To Valley?

Posted: 6:15 pm EDT May 12, 2008Updated: 9:47 am EDT May 13, 2008

Veterans' Services told NEWS9 Monday that plans are in the works to build a new Veterans' Home in Barnesville.

According to Veterans' Services President Albert Parkhurst the home would not only provide local vets with health care, but also provide the Valley with nearly 400 new jobs.

Parkhurst said the need for the home in the area is dire.

"We have a lot of veterans coming back from the Iraq war that have problems we've never had before, and they're going to need a place to be taken care of," Parkhurst said.

Veterans' Service worker Cindy Maupin said there are currently only two veterans' homes in the state and none are close to the Valley.

"For the local people in our area to put their loved ones in a nursing home it's hard enough without having to travel four hours to visit them," Maupin said.

Maupin added that by building a veterans' home in Barnesville local families with veterans' will be able to stick together.

County Commissioner Chuck Probst told NEWS9 the cost to build the home would be covered by the VA, but the cost to keep it up and running is something the state would have to pay.

Parkhurst told NEWS9 a meeting is taking place Friday, May 16, at the county commissioners office.

Parkhurst said at the meeting the county will talk with members of the state Legislature about the probability of state funding.
