Missing WWII Airman Returns Home To Valley

A World War II airman, missing for more than 60 years, finally returned home to the Valley Wednesday after his family was reunited with his remains.

Airman Ernest Glenn Munn, of St. Clairsville, went missing in 1942 after the World War II plane he was flying crashed into the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Munn was missing for years until his frozen body was finally discovered in March 2008.

Wednesday Munn's sisters, Jeanne Pyle, Sara Zeyer and Lois Shriver traveled to the Pittsburgh International Airport to pick up his remains and bring him home to Belmont County for a burial.

Munn's sister, Pyle, told NEWS9 she didn't think her brother would ever be found.

Pyle said having Munn home truly is a dream come true, and she said watching his casket come off the plane was almost surreal for her.

"I just felt like he was there and his spirit was still there, and I just wanted him to know how much I've missed him," Pyle said.

A motorcycling group called the "Patriot Riders" followed the sisters to Pittsburgh and escorted the family as they brought Munn back to Belmont County.

Honors for Munn are set to continue as a full military burial is scheduled for Munn Saturday, May 17, in Colerain, Ohio.
