Campus Reacts To Student's Death

Students at Bethany College are reacting to the sudden death of one of their own.

Freshman Channing Benson was found dead early Wednesday morning in his dorm room.

"He had a lot of friends," said student and friend Travis Isiminger, a sophomore at Bethany. "He was a real outgoing, real nice kid. It's just a shame."

Students at Bethany remembered the 19-year-old, whose life was cut short as the school year came to an end.

Isiminger and sophomore Spencer Allemond were on campus when word of the tragedy hit.

"Everyone was just shook up," said Allemond. "Everyone that knew about it just absolutely couldn't believe it. It's the end of the year and something suddenly like this happens."

According to Sheriff Richard Ferguson, Benson was found dead in his dorm at Harlan Hall.

Ferguson told NEWS9 that Benson's father hadn't heard from him in a few days and called the college, and that's when security went in and found the body.

The campus was left shocked, unable to believe that the freshman football player, who's outgoing personality lit up a room, was gone.

"He would always try to make you laugh, always tell a joke," said Isiminger. "Always try to brighten your day when you're around him."

As students grieve, the college is offering help.

"We are making counselors available to his teammates on the football team and his friends on campus too,” said Dr. Scott Miller, president of Bethany College.

While students reach out to comfort each other, many told NEWS9 that Benson's family is in their thoughts and prayers.

"I just wish them the best,” said Isiminger. “I know how difficult it's got to be right now."

As for how Benson died, Ferguson said foul play is not suspected.

He said Benson suffered from diabetes and medication was found in his room, but police aren't sure if he may have died from a medical condition.
