Police Continue High-Speed Chase Investigation

Friday, May 16, 2008 – updated: 1:50 pm EDT May 16, 2008

Anthony Elmore is facing several charges and is in court Friday after police said he led them on a high-speed chase through the city of Steubenville.

Elmore is now in jail after a wild night involving Steubenville police. Elmore is one part of a duo that officers said was speeding through city streets overnight, even going the wrong direction on state Route 7.

It all started around 1 a.m. Friday. Police said they spotted a car that ran a stop sign at the intersection of Fifth and North Streets. When the officer tried to pull the car over, the driver, Elmore, fled, police said.

“Upon walking up to the vehicle, he observed two people, the vehicle sped off,” said Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty.

That’s when the chase started, reaching speeds up to 70 mph through downtown. McCafferty said his officers monitored the situation, but said when cars travel that fast, it’s not safe for anyone, especially innocent drivers.

“Pursuits are always dangerous, but people continue to run from police,” said McCafferty.

Police said Elmore’s passenger jumped out of the car during the pursuit and got away. Police said Elmore continued to try to lose police, continuing the chase near the Heritage Apartments. That’s where police said he got out of the car and a foot chase began, but Elmore didn’t get very far.

“He was hiding in the weeds after he fled from the vehicle,” said McCafferty.

Police said they also found a plastic bag with marijuana on Elmore.

Elmore is facing several charges, including fleeing and eluding and possession of marijuana.

While Elmore is in jail, police are investigating the case. Police said the other man who jumped out of the car is still on the loose.
