Skeletal Remains Identified As New York Man

Monday, May 19, 2008 – updated: 6:48 pm EDT May 19, 2008

Investigators will be distributing flyers in the hope of finding someone who can help them fill in gaps about skeletal remains found in Marshall County.

The skeletal remains found in Marshall County last week have been identified as Leonard “Leo” Lanci, 21, of New York, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday.

Officials said the remains were found in a wooded area south of Moundsville, about 300 yards from Route 2 south.

Crews took the remains to the medical examiner's office in Morgantown.

While investigators said they know he is from New York, they do not know why he was in the area and are hoping someone recognizes Lanci on the flyer and can help them fill in the gaps.

Investigators said Lanci was supposed to get on a bus from New York to Boston on Nov. 30, 2007, but his friends said he never did.

The next day he called his father and said he was in Cambridge, Ohio, and then on Dec. 2 his father reported him missing.

Investigators said a friend said they saw Lanci on Long Island in February of this year but no one had heard from him since then.

The gap from February to when Lanci’s body ended up in the remote area of Marshall County last week is where investigators are hoping to find out what happened. They are relying on the public to provide any details.

“There are some indications from items we found at the crime scene that there may be a connection to this area. We are hoping there is some communication through his computer to someone locally,” said Marshall County Sheriff Department Chief Deputy Kevin Cecil.

Investigators believe the area where his body was found is where he died and may have been there for about two months.

They need help from anyone who may have information about Lanci. You can leave an anonymous tip at (304) 843-5422 or call the Sheriff's Office at (304) 843-1500.
