Apex Landfill Addresses Recent Violations

Tuesday, May 20, 2008 – updated: 1:30 pm EDT May 20, 2008

Complaints of smelly air and loud noises have surrounded the Apex Landfill for some time. The Jefferson County Board of Health said the company that owns the landfill is trying to get things under control.

The Apex Landfill is in Amsterdam and many people who live near it say the odor is unbearable.

NEWS9 has found out that the owner of the Apex Landfill has bought new equipment, installed a misting system in a new location and is using an alternate covering on a daily basis.

Jefferson County Health Administrator Bruce Misselwitz said the company has done everything it agreed to do concerning recent violations. Misselwitz said it could be quite some time before neighbors won’t smell the stench.

“The number of complaints here have not dropped off significantly yet and we are still monitoring the landfill, almost on a daily basis,” said Misselwitz.

The Health Department said it will continue to keep an eye on the landfill to see if the changes have any effect on the smell.
