Families Have Mixed Feelings About Vacation Gas Prices

Posted: 5:33 pm EDT May 26, 2008Updated: 7:01 pm EDT May 26, 2008

Families packed into Oglebay Park on Memorial Day, squeezing out the very last bit of a long weekend.

"[My grandchildren] go fishing, swimming golfing. They go to the zoo, ride the trolley," said Kevin Heller of Wheeling.

It's all fun and games for the children, but one thing that's no fun for adults to think about is gas prices.

For Heller, Oglebay Park is just 15 minutes from home and is an inexpensive way to spend time with his grandchildren.

"Four dollars a gallon, you don't want to drive to Cincinnati or somewhere, King’s Island," he said.

The Jackson family came from Columbus to spend the day at Oglebay Park. They said for a trip to spend time with family, gas prices aren't a concern.

"But I don't know if it will come into play when we think about our longer vacations," said Ed Jackson.

The Childers did some careful calculations before they decided to drive the 50 miles from Chester, West Virginia to Oglebay.

"It's about an hour. We've got an economy car,” said Carl Childers. “We're probably going to use $10."

Oglebay officials weren’t available for comment Monday. Last week officials told NEWS9 they expect to have an idea of how many local people the park drew in for the holiday weekend the day after Memorial Day.
