Police: Bizarre Burglary Targets Deaf Woman

A man burglarized a deaf woman and then trespassed into a local hospital Saturday, according to police.

Martins Ferry Patrolman George Shreve told NEWS9 it was a bizarre crime spree that started with 21-year-old Ricky Runner Jr. breaking into the home of a deaf woman on the 400 block of North 5th Street.

Shreve said before stealing a lock box and several items of jewelry from her home, Runner Jr. woke up the deaf woman.

"She was asleep on a chair in the living room and he was right next to her, rooting through things. She came to and saw him tip toeing," Shreve said.

Officers told NEWS9 it was the smell of alcohol on Runner Jr.'s body that woke her.

Police said Runner Jr. did not harm the woman, or the two other people sleeping in the home.

According to police, Runner Jr. took off down North 5th Street after the alleged burglary and then headed into a nearby cemetery.

At the cemetery officers said Runner Jr. sifted through the deaf woman's jewelry he'd stolen, and then tried to crack the lock box.

Shreve said Runner Jr. left what he didn't want at the cemetery, and stashed the rest in his pockets.

Runner Jr. then ran into the parking lot of East Ohio Regional Hospital, according to Shreve, and tried to break into several cars.

Without any luck at the vehicles, officers said Runner Jr. then broke into the hospital, but as of Saturday evening they are not sure why he did so.

"He tried to make entry into the birth place saying he wanted to see a baby that was born, but the name didn't match. Then he said he wanted to visit his grandmother, when he was found in continuous care, but no grandmother was there," Shreve said.

Runner Jr. eventually left the hospital and police said they finally caught up with him at the old Martins Ferry High School.

Runner Jr.'s being charged with two counts of felony burglary and one charge of safe cracking.

East Ohio Regional assured NEWS9 that at no point in time were any patient's at risk.
