Parishioners Say Goodbye To Churches

Posted: 10:24 pm EDT June 7, 2008Updated: 11:43 pm EDT June 7, 2008

Before walking into their last mass at St. Stanislaus Church in Steubenville on Saturday, many parishioners stopped to reflect.

"I went to grade school at St. Stanislaus. Started in first grade and so it's a very hard time to see this close down," said Mary Jo Kasko.

For many, the building is more than just the place they've attended church week after week. Genevieve Januszkiewicz has made 95 years of memories there.

"I've had my schooling here. I had my children born here. I had my marriage here," said Januszkiewicz.

They stopped to capture the emotional day on film and greet those they're used to seeing every week. Some said they’re not sure where they'll worship now.

And it's not just inside the church, but outside, at the grotto where parishioners said they have much to remember.

"When we were in grade school I remember the mayflower crowning and the children used to bring the flowers up to Mary and put them on the grotto and all the candles were lit inside," said Kasko.

As they think back to all the life-long memories they've created, parishioners are left wondering what will happen to the place many of them grew up in.

"I hope another parish group might buy the church,” said Kasko. “It's a beautiful, beautiful building."

Some of the parishioners say they plan to go to another church near where they live. Others still haven't decided where they'll attend. Sunday, St. Pius and St. Anthony's churches will hold their last masses.
