Illegal Immigrants Taken Into Custody

According to deputies, three suspected illegal immigrants are in custody of immigration officials after being caught passing through Ohio County on the interstate.

The Ohio County deputy who initiated the traffic stop speaks Spanish and said he was able to find out the driver is Amish and of Latino descent and that he was taking the others to a roofing job with an Amish company.

Just before 5 a.m. Thursday, a deputy, running radar, pulled over a pickup truck he noticed speeding in the eastbound lanes on Interstate 70, near the Elm Grove exit.

Deputies said there were six people in the vehicle. Deputies said three of the people handed over foreign identifications and said they were illegal immigrants and had been deported from the country before.

Deputies said the other three people were released after proving they were in the country legally.

Deputies said this is the first time they’ve seen suspected illegal immigrants working for an Amish company.

“There must have been some correlation between the relatives and these people that applied for the jobs and then received the work at this company. For this to occur, 33 years of law enforcement, this is the first time I’ve ever seen this,” said Chief Deputy Pat Butler.

There have been 113 illegal immigrants detained since Sheriff Tom Burgoyne and Chief Deputy Pat Butler took office in Ohio County.
