Steubenville Police Looking For Shooting Suspect

Monday, June 23, 2008 – updated: 9:48 am EDT June 24, 2008

Police in Steubenville said they are still looking for a man who shot a woman over the weekend.

Police said Ronnie Freeman shot Kathy Klecker. Police said the shooting happened while the two were arguing and Klecker had a knife in her hand before she was shot.

Freeman is accused of shooting Klecker in the arm inside an apartment on Pine Street in Steubenville early Saturday morning.

“She kept asking the male suspect to leave and he refused to go,” said Steubenville Police Chief Bill McCafferty. “She went in the kitchen and she allegedly was going to get a knife. When she came around the turn, he shot her in the arm.”

Klecker is currently recovering at home. Police are still looking for Freeman.

Neighbors, who did not want to be identified, are concerned.

“It’s frightening, frightening and upsetting,” said one neighbor.

Neighbors said they hope an organization to clean up crime on the hilltop can make a difference.

“We are working very hard to clean up this hilltop. Not only with litter but with situations like this,” said a neighbor.

Neighbors said the violence had slowed down but is picking back up.

Police said once Freeman is found, he will be charged with felonious assault.
