Suspected Illegal Immigrant Still Missing

Belmont County deputies are still on the lookout for a suspected illegal immigrant who fled during a traffic stop on Interstate 70.

As of Tuesday afternoon, searches by foot, by dogs and by plane have been unsuccessful.

Deputies said they stopped a van headed Eastbound and discovered 11 suspected illegals inside.

Deputies said one man wouldn't stop and took of running, jumping head first over a 70 foot retainer wall.

"He layed there appeared to be unconscious for 20 to 30 seconds. The deputy could not get to him because of the length of the wall. He saw the man get up and stagger off," said Sgt. Tom DeVaul. "It looked like he was injured pretty bad. "

Deputies searched for hours into the night.

"We followed footsteps and blood but because of the fog and darkness it was hard," said DeVaul.

Deputies said Erick Perez Hernandez, 19, was last seen wearing wearing a dark yellow sweat shirt and jeans.

He's 5'5" to 5'7" and weighs between 130-150 pounds.

Hoping daylight would help in their efforts, deputies hit the woods again, scouring the area for Hernandez.

They even called in a State Highway Patrol plane.

"Seven of us looking on foot in the ravine where he was last seen and the air unit also checked that area," said DeVaul.

Hours later, deputies called off the search by air and ground.

"We're still going to have patrols and hopefully catch a sight of him.," said DeVaul.

Deputies hope Hernandez is still alive and survived the fall.

Deputies said he will need medical attention but may also face charges of obstructing and escape.

Meantime, the 10 other suspected illegals are in custody waiting for immigration officials to arrive.
