Search For Suspected Illegal Immigrant Continues

Posted: 11:46 am EDT June 25, 2008Updated: 2:04 pm EDT June 25, 2008

The search for a suspected illegal immigrant is reaching day 2.

Police are still searching for Erick Hernandez, who jumped more than 70 feet and escaped when police tried to arrest him and 10 other suspected illegal immigrants on Interstate 70.

Belmont County deputies were actively searching for Hernandez along the Ohio River on Wednesday from Blaine to Bridgeport.

Police said Hernandez was last seen wearing a dark yellow hooded sweatshirt and jeans. Authorities said he’s 19 years old, 5 feet 5 inches to 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs between 130 and 150 pounds.

Hernandez managed to escape authorities when 10 other suspected illegal immigrants were taken into custody on Interstate 70. Police said Hernandez leaped 70 feet over a retaining wall.

Deputy Aynsley Hildebrand said it was hard to follow Hernandez because of the dark and foggy conditions. Hildebrand said he did see Hernandez land and then crawl. After that, Hildebrand lost sight.

Investigators believe that if Hernandez is not dead, he is severely injured. Local hospitals have been notified to contact the sheriff’s office if anyone suspicious checks in.
