A former investigator with the Jefferson County, Ohio, Coroner’s Office is accused of stealing a dead man’s credit card then charging hundreds of dollars at an exotic club in Weirton, W.Va.David Workman is currently out on bond in West Virginia but still under investigation in Ohio. The family of the victim is still struggling with the fact that their husband and father is gone and grieving is even harder now.Family members said 51-year-old Joseph Verstraten loved his family, loved the military and loved to laugh.“My dad was a big kid at heart,” said son Joe Verstraten.Family members are still heartbroken. They’re coping with his sudden death after a driver hit his motorcycle, taking his life.“We were high school sweethearts, met in ninth grade. We’d been together ever since. We’d be celebrating our 32nd anniversary next week,” said Verstraten’s wife Flora. On the day of Verstraten’s funeral the family learned someone stole his credit card and charged hundreds of dollars at an exotic club.“It sickens me that someone would disrespect my husband, his body, to be with him and do such a thing,” said Flora. The man accused, Workman, is a former investigator at the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.Joe Verstraten said he’s angry. He heard Workman’s reply to questions from NEWS9.“It was an accident,” said Workman.“Make no mistake about it. David Workman did not accidentally go through my dad’s belongings. He did not accidentally steal his credit card. It was no accident he got caught. It was good police work,” Joe Verstraten said. The family said they’re hurt that someone tarnished the Verstraten name.“I would say to David Workman he shamed himself, his family and disrespected a tragedy in our family,” Joe Verstraten said. The family is determined to make sure the same thing doesn’t happen to another family.“We know he didn’t die in vain. We hope something good comes of this,” Flora Verstraten said.Flora Verstraten said her family and her faith are getting her through this. She said she believes she will be with her husband again. She hopes others learn a lesson from their tragedy: appreciate each day and be prepared for anything.Stay with NEWS9 and WTOV9.com for continuing coverage.
