Posted: 6:25 pm EDT June 26, 2008Updated: 9:39 pm EDT June 26, 2008

Mayor Phil Wallace of Martins Ferry told NEWS9 Thursday he's pushing to make it state law in Ohio to wear a helment while on a motorcycle.

Wallace said a member of his community just recently died in a motorcycle crash, and he doesn't want anyone else to have to experience that loss.

Lt. Roger Norris with the Ohio State Highway Patrol told NEWS9, already this year, three people have died in motorcycle crashes in the Belmont and Monroe County area.

There have been more than 20 accidents involving motorcycles total, and 15 resulted in injury.

Wallace said he's written Sen. Jason Wilson regarding his desire to make wearing a helment on a motorcycle state law.

Currently it is state law in West Virginia to wear a helmet while on a motorcycle.
