Shots Ring Out In Steubenville Neighborhood

Tuesday, July 1, 2008 – updated: 7:50 pm EDT July 1, 2008

Residents in the Pleasant Heights section of Steubenville said they heard gunshots early Tuesday morning and then found a bullet that landed in their living room. Steubenville police recovered the slug shortly after the shooting was reported.

Shawn Babella said he heard people in the alley near his house arguing around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. Babella said a few minutes later he heard two or three gunshots and then found a bullet hole in his dining room window.

Babella and his girlfriend, Dena Meredith, said they have been hearing gunshots in their neighborhood quite a bit over the past few months, but this shooting really shook them up.

“It was pretty scary because I wouldn’t think that would happen to me,” said Babella.

“We walk back and forth all the time. It could be in the midst of when we are walking to and from work,” said Meredith. “I just wish they would find somebody who’s doing it because this is just getting ridiculous.”

The bullet left two marks on the wall as well as a hole in the window and screen.
