Firefighters in Wheeling said a house fire Wednesday afternoon remains under investigation.

The fire broke out in the basement of a home on the 1300 block of Valley View Avenue around noon.

Officials said a man inside the home saw smoke coming from a couch. He immediately grabbed a fire extinguisher and had the fire contained before crews arrived.

"The fire was basically out on arrival, but there was still some smoke and some hot spots that we took care of," said Assistant Fire Chief Larry Murphy.

Everyone made it out of the home safely and there were no reported injuries.
