Boy Scouts Credited For Dousing Jefferson County Porch Fire

Posted: 4:42 pm EDT July 11, 2008Updated: 6:23 pm EDT July 11, 2008

Four local Boy Scouts are being credited with saving their neighbor's porch from flames thanks to quick thinking and fast action.

Tyler Mitchell, Scotty Miller, his brother Hayden McKnight and their friend Matthew, all of Rayland, were enjoying a day at the pool when they saw flames coming from a neighbor's back porch.

"I looked over and saw smoke and flames coming from a chair and a box," Tyler said.

They quickly reacted. First, one of the boys called to their mother to get help. Then, Scotty jumped out of the pool, leaped over two fences and grabbed a garden hose to douse the flames at the First Street home with the neighbors still inside.

"They wouldn't have noticed it. It could've gotten a lot worse, so I just figured I had to put it out because no one else was here to do anything," Scotty said.

The woman who lives at the home said she heard the commotion and came outside.

"I really do appreciate it because I would not have known," she said.

The boys said their Boy Scout training came in handy.

"We just try to do our best and help everyone that's in need," Scotty said.

While the boys jumped into action to help their neighbor, emergency crews said people should always call the appropriate agency and never put themselves at risk.

The boys will be recognized for their bravery by the mayor at a later date.
