Police: Body Found In Ohio River Was Intentionally Weighted Down

Friday, July 18, 2008 – updated: 4:50 pm EDT July 18, 2008

Brooke County officials said the body of a man found in the Ohio River was intentionally weighted down and had been there less than a week.

Sheriff Richard Ferguson said investigators still have not identified the victim and said there have been no reports of missing people in the county.

Police are treating the case as a homicide.

"Somebody put a lot of thought into the body disposal, putting this body in the water. It was not something that was done quickly, rapidly or the spur of the moment. This was thought out," said Chief Deputy Chuck Jackson.

The victim has several distinctive characteristics: a tattoo on his upper left arm that reads "Sherrie" and another just below it that is a heart with a dagger through it. Deputies said a large scar indicates open heart or bypass surgery.

The man is believed to be between 50 to 75 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and about 195 pounds. He was wearing blue jeans, a light-colored T-shirt and suspenders.

Fishermen discovered the body Wednesday around 10 p.m. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
