Swimmer's Body Recovered; Mother Speaks About Son's Death

The body of a missing swimmer was recovered just before noon Friday in Wetzel County.

Witnesses said Troy Hammerstone, 24, jumped off of a dock about 6 p.m. Thursday and never resurfaced.

Using underwater cameras, crews found his body near the New Martinsville Marina.

New Martinsville Police Chief Tim Cecil said, "We wanted to make sure we still searched. We didn't want to just give up."

Sue Blake, the victim's mother, said her son was trying to better his life.

"His life has been rough. He's just trying to get his life back together until this happened," Blake said.

Police said Hammerstone and his friends were taking a big risk swimming in an area with much debris.

Blake urged others to heed the "No Swimming" signs.

"If somebody does go swimming, please be careful because accidents do happen. You're here one minute and gone the next," she said.
