Local Village Wants Park Near Busy Intersection

Wednesday, July 23, 2008 – updated: 11:30 pm EDT July 23, 2008

The Village of Bridgeport is hoping to build a new park in the middle of a busy intersection, and village officials told NEWS9 on Wednesday that they do not see child safety as a problem in the area.

The park would sit right near Route 7, next to a railroad, next door to Wheeling Island.

They received a $3,000 grant to build the park and told NEWS9 they'd like to name it The Lincoln Avenue Park.

Chamber of Commerce President Rick Kolb told NEWS9 he feels the location will be OK.

"I don't feel that traffic will be an issue. You're in a downtown intersection, there's all traffic lights, so, the traffic is really controlled," Kolb said.

Kolb added that the village plans to build a fence around the entire park area, if the plan comes to life.

However, Kolb said, the village still needs about $25,000 in donations to make the park a reality.

And also, village officials are currently dealing with figuring out what to do with a gas line that runs through the area where they'd like to build the park.

They're hoping to have the project at least started, if not finalized, by as early as September.

Kolb said the village needs the community's support, though.
