BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio -- An elementary school in Belmont County is trying to quash a mold problem that’s surfaced.Environmentalists, school board members and teachers met at Union Local Elementary to discuss the problems on Wednesday night. The school said mold spores have become an issue, but not to the level where the school would need to be shut down. They told NEWS9 that fast action on the school’s part is what saved things from getting much worse."I have called at least once a week since this building has been open and complained about the air quality," said Mariam Martin, who is the music teacher at Union Local. The school said Martin's room is the problem spot, where mold is growing on her wall.“Often times it smells like a basement, just moldy and musty," said Martin.Environmentalist John Gola said the mold is a sign that something in the building is failing. He said mold needs three things to grow: air, food and moisture.Gola said water seeped into the wall of the music room and used the dry wall as it's food, eating away at it.The school has already taken action, as they brought experts in for a round of testing and removed the drywall in the music room. They said the area is cleaned out, and the water problem will be taken care of with a sealant.Gola said he's happy the school took action when they did because things could have been a lot worse. The school told NEWS9 that there was a second round of testing, and environmentalists told them those results showed the level of mold spores is now under control, and there is no threat to anyone's health. There will be another meeting held on the issue for all parents to attend, which is set for Aug. 13th.
