Pittsburgh Researcher Says Cell Phones Linked To Brain Cancer

Thursday, July 24, 2008 – updated: 4:54 pm EDT July 24, 2008

A University of Pittsburgh researcher is telling people to keep cell phone chatter to a minimum or the result could be cancer.

The alleged link has been a hot topic in the past, and most scientists and major health organizations don't agree on the answer.

Citing research showing concern about electromagnetic waves reaching parts of the brain, the University of Pittsburgh consulted 21 experts around the world who said cell phone usage increases the risk for brain cancer.

The researchers warned consumers to take precautions like use headsets, keep calls short and switch sides.

They also said people should not keep phones in their pockets and never let children use them except in emergencies.

Dr. Ronald Herberman, director of the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, said, "This could potentially contribute to increased risk for developing brain tumors particularly the area of the brain close to ear."

Survey: Will information like this deter you from using your cell phone as often?

However, officials with the cell phone industry said the scientists are scaring the public for no good reason.

"Everyone agrees that you have to be guided by what the actual science tells you, that you can't make declarations and recommendations that are not based on the science," said Joe Farin, spokesman for the CTIA Wireless Association.

Most scientists, the World Health Organization, the Food and Drug Administration and the American Cancer Society have all said there is no link between cell phone usage and cancer.

"We don't have complete knowledge, but we have a lot of knowledge, and so far, the knowledge does not indicate a risk," said Dr. Michael Thune, of the American Cancer Society.

When most cell phone users are asked how much they talk on-the-go, many, like Steubenville residents Linda Clarke and Brianna Marker, said at least a few times a day.

"A lot. I can't even tell you how many times," Marker said.
