Husband, Wife Charged In Connection With Elderly Man's Slaying

Thursday, July 24, 2008 – updated: 12:11 am EDT July 25, 2008

A second person has been charged in connection with the slaying of an elderly man whose body was found in the Ohio River last week.

Angela Lohr was arraigned Thursday on a charge of accessory to murder.

Angela Lohr is the wife of James Lohr Jr., who is accused of killing his 80-year-old father, wrapping the body in a tarp and disposing the body in the Ohio River.

According to the West Virginia State Police, the Lohrs were living with the victim, James Lohr Sr., in his trailer in Valley Grove, Ohio County.

Witnesses told police they heard the father and son arguing, then heard a single gunshot.

According to a criminal complaint, investigators said the victim was killed by a small-caliber gunshot wound to the head.

Further, investigators said Angela Lohr admitted to police that she and her husband were using the victim's credit cards without his permission.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, police said they believe the victim was killed on July 10 and his body dumped in the mouth of Short Creek between July 10 and July 11. Police said Lohr Jr. immediately became a suspect after he identified his father's body on July 19. Further, they said they believe the murder weapon belonged to the victim.

State police said when they searched the victim's trailer they found evidence of human blood in several places, including the back porch and washing machine, and said they located a bloody towel.

They also said they found a chain that matches the one used to attach cinderblocks to the victim to weigh the body down in the river.

James Lohr Jr. was arrested Wednesday at a truck stop near Dayton, Ohio, and is being held in the Northern Regional Jail pending a preliminary hearing on Aug. 4.

Both he and his wife are being held without bond.

Ohio County prosecutor Scott Smith said he charged Lohr Jr. with murder based on the case presented to him and the criteria for a case to carry a murder charge. Smith said a jury will decided the degree of the murder charge.
