I-70 Back Open After Semi Catches Fire and Trucks Collide

Posted: 10:21 pm EDT July 24, 2008

A truck caught on fire and two other trucks collided on Interstate 70 in Ohio County on Thursday.

It happened near exit 10 close to the Highlands.

The cab of a truck caught fire in the eastbound lane.

Then semi trucks collided in the westbound lane.

As for the fire troopers said it may have been due to engine strain from the steep hill to the Highlands.

As firefighters rushed to the flames, chaos erupted on the other side of the median, when a semi truck hauling cars collided with a truck in the westbound lanes.

“They probably took their eyes off the road and were looking over here at the fire,” said Chief John Harto, of the Valley Grove Fire Dept.

Meanwhile, drivers waiting in the backed up traffic started having problems of their own.

911 dispatchers got several calls of people reporting break-downs while waiting in traffic.

Both the east and west bound lanes of I-70 had to be shut down for about an hour.

Luckily, in both the fire and the crash, there were no injuries reported.
