5K Race Brings In Record Number Of Runners

The 11th Annual Debbie Green Memorial 5K Race/Walk for leukemia was a major success, according to event coordinators.

Ronnie Green told NEWS9 this year 850 people registered for the event, the most registrants ever.

All proceeds from this years event will go to Anna Byers of Weirton, W.Va.

Anna was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, but has since undergone two years of chemotherapy.

She is now in remission but her family is still sorting out the medical bills from years of doctors visits.

The money from the race will aid in her expenses.

Julius Kiptoo won the race finishing in 14 minutes. The first female finisher was Meskerem Legesse.

The first local runner to cross the finish line was Ryan Beabout, a Wheeling Park graduate. Beabout finished 14th overall.
