House Explosion Draws Multiple Rescuers

Residents Feel Blast's Shockwave More Than Mile Away

Posted: 11:04 pm EDT August 7, 2008Updated: 6:26 am EDT August 8, 2008

Multiple police, fire and emergency medical departments were on the scene of a house explosion on Jefferson County Road 56 near Knoxville.

The home is in the 4000 Block of County Road 56.

This is the third explosion at the same home, investigators said.

Previously rescuers had responded to explosions at the same address in November of 2003 and April of 2001.

Neighbors called 911 to report the most recent blast just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

23 fire and EMS crews were on scene into the early morning hours Friday. Crews said debris was thrown about a quarter mile from the home and when they got on scene they had to deal with an additional 10 explosions because of possible ammunition and fuels inside the home.

Eric Walter, the owner of the home, is recovering in a Pittsburgh hospital burn unit. There were also several children inside the home, but they got out before the house exploded.

A neighbor who called NEWS9 to report the explosion said he and his wife had felt the impact of the blast more than a mile from the scene.
